Awkwafina Talks Destin Daniel Cretton’s Passionate Vision
Awkwafina is eager to start filming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, mainly due to what she describes as director Destin Daniel Cretton’s “passionate” vision for the new Marvel Studios film.
Back in July, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige officially confirmed Shang-Chi as one of the new films for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While confirming the title, he also confirmed director Destin Daniel Cretton and the casting of Awkwafina in an unidentified lead role.
While promoting her upcoming film Jumanji: The Next Level, Awkwafina addressed her role in Shang-Chi and compared the passion of both Jake Kasdan and Destin Daniel Cretton:
“I mean, the process is, is that for both I met with both [Jumanji: The Next Level director] Jake Kasdan and [Shang-Chi director] Destin [Daniel Daniel Cretton], who was doing Shang-Chi. And I really, I can tell from both of them that they have extremely passionate and clear visions for the stories they want to tell and I think that’s really important for me to come on to a project.”
Awkwafina appears in Jumanji: The Next Level with Karen Gillan, who has a prominent role in the MCU as Nebula.
2019 has been pretty successful for Awkwafina. The actress/comedian appeared in A24’s The Farewell, which received universal acclaim and awards buzz with Awkwafina’s performance among one of the most-praised elements. With her cast in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi as well as her involvement in films such as The Farewell and Crazy Rich Asians, it just goes to show her excitement to work on films that further promote Asian representation on the big screen.
