DC Universe continues to expand its library of comics, TV shows, and movies, with new originals. With Swamp Thing coming on the last day of this month, Stargirl is only a few months behind it in August. Brec Bassinger starred in the Nickelodeon series Bella and the Bulldogs from 2015 to 2016 along with a tenure of other shows and movies afterward. Now at 20 years old, she gets to play the titular character for the upcoming DC Universe original series Stargirl.
The character’s alter ego, Courtney Whitmore, was created by Geoff Johns and introduced in the 1999 comic Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. In it, Courtney finds the cosmic conveyer belt from the original Star-Spangled Kid (later called Skyman). After putting on the costume, she’s given the abilities of enhanced strength, speed, and stamina, with the ability to project shooting stars. She was the second Star-Spangled Kid until JSA All Stars issue 4, where she became Stargirl moving forward.
