Friends Star Jennifer Aniston Wants Less Films From Marvel Studios

Jennifer Aniston, star of the hit sitcom Friends says that she wants to see less films from Marvel Studios from hitting the market.

Jennifer Aniston, whose role as Rachel Green in Friends helped catapult her to become one of the biggest actresses in Hollywood was interviewed by Variety to discuss her upcoming Apple TV+ series The Morning Show. During the interview, Jennifer Aniston was asked about why she decided to return to television, to which she reflected on the current state of the film industry and shares her thoughts on the dominance of Marvel Studios:

“It wasn’t until the last couple of years when these streaming services were just sort of exploding with this amount of quality that I actually started to think, ‘Wow, that’s better than what I just did.’ And then you’re seeing what’s available out there and it’s just diminishing and diminishing in terms of, it’s big Marvel movies. Or things that I’m not just asked to do or really that interested in living in a green screen.”

Marvel Studios has been dominating cinemas for over a decade now, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe becoming the highest-grossing film franchise of all-time and more recently, Avengers: Endgame becoming the highest-grossing film of all-time, surpassing James Cameron’s Avatar. While critics and audiences alike have given Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga mostly positive reviews for 23 films in a row, some have criticized Marvel Studios’ output and craft.

Jennifer Aniston is just the latest member of the entertainment industry to share their criticism of Marvel Studios’ films. Recently, Martin Scorsese revealed that he does not find Marvel Studios movies to be “cinema” and compares them to the entertainment value of theme park rides.

Based off of Jennifer Aniston’s comments here, she seems to be more interested in the storytelling opportunities that streaming services offer in regards to new film and TV projects than what the big blockbuster entertainment scene offers, which include the likes of Marvel Studios.

Marvel Studios is expanding their horizons with their upcoming Phase 4 slate, with multiple shows planned for Disney+ including The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, Hawkeye, What If…?, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight and She-Hulk.
