While the early seasons of Game of Thrones received acclaimed and accolades, reception towards the latter seasons was notably more divisive, with much of the ire being directed towards showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. During an appearance as the Austin Film Festival, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss spoke to an audience about their experience working on Game of Thrones and acknowledged some missteps they made during their tenure.

While discussing their work on the Game of Thrones pilot, Benioff and Wiess admitted that the first episode was riddled with basic writing mistakes, saying “everything we could make a mistake in, we did.” The duo also confessed that they didn’t understand the characters at first and that HBO made them write and film 100 minutes of material after the episodes were initially clocking in at roughly 39 minutes.
