Robert Downey Jr. Reacts To Martin Scorsese’s Criticism Of Marvel
Avengers: Endgame star Robert Downey Jr. shared his thoughts on Martin Scorsese’s recent critical comments on Marvel films.
Last week, acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese stirred up a spirited conversation on the internet after making critical comments about Marvel films. During an interview with Empire Magazine, Martin Scorsese noted that while the Marvel films are well-made with actors trying their best, he doesn’t consider them to be “cinema.”
Of course, Martin Scorsese’s comments prompted an online debate over whether or not the filmmaker had a point and what constitutes “cinema.” While speaking on The Howard Stern Show, Robert Downey Jr. weighed in on Martin Scorsese’s criticism, noting that he appreciates the filmmaker’s opinion but that it does not make sense to claim the Marvel films aren’t cinema:
“I appreciate his opinion because I think it’s like anything. We need all the different perspectives so we can come to center and move on. It’d be like saying ‘Howard Stern isn’t radio.’ It makes no sense to say it.”
The conversation turned to the success of the Marvel films and how they have dominated the box office over the past decade. However, when Howard Stern suggested Martin Scorsese might be frustrated with Marvel’s success, Robert Downey Jr. appeared to disagree:
“When you come in like a stomping beast and you eliminate the competition in such a demonstrative way, it’s phenomenal. […] Do you actually think Martin Scorsese is upset about Marvel movies?”
Over ten years ago, Robert Downey Jr. made his debut as Iron Man and played a critical role in launching Marvel Studios’ highly-successful cinematic universe. A decade later, Iron Man’s journey came to an end with Avengers: Endgame and Robert Downey Jr. received acclaim for what is intended to be his final performance as the hero.
