The Suicide Squad Star John Cena Reflects On Feud With Dwayne Johnson

The Suicide Squad star John Cena discusses his WWE feud with Dwayne Johnson.

Wrester-turned-actor John Cena is set to join the DC Extended Universe in James Gunn’s upcoming film the Suicide Squad. However, before landing the Suicide Squad role, John Cena was previously best-known for his WWE career and his famous rivalry with Dwayne Johnson.

During an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, John Cena reflected on his WWE feud with Dwayne Johnson and how the two of them resolved their differences. As John Cena explained, his rivalry with Dwayne Johnson came to end after their famous WWE rematch against each other:

“The Rock and I are most known for our tremendous WWE feud that broke WWE pay-per-view records. And we kind of talked a lot of trash about each other. Now, we also had a follow-up match a year later. So, we spent a year making fun of each other, and then, one night beating each other up. And then we were liked, ‘did we just become best friends?’ ‘Yep.’ So, basically, we were able to set aside our differences on that night.”

Afterword, John Cena recalled the advice he received from his former rival while he was vying for a role in the comedy Trainwreck, when Dwayne Johnson told him, “Just be yourself, man. That’s why they asked you there in the first place.”

Dwayne Johnson currently has several projects lined-up, including Jumanji: The Next Level, Jungle Cruise, and DC’s Black Adam. Meanwhile, John Cena will make his DCEU debut when The Suicide Squad hits theaters in two years.

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the Suicide Squad in his upcoming movie.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
